"Alumni Spotlight!
Maddie Small is a fifth-generation Missoulian, University of Montana Alumni, and the owner of Range Physical Therapy + Wellness. She’s always loved Missoula’s supportive community and abundance of recreational outdoor activities. Because she grew up swimming, playing soccer, and enjoying Montana’s outdoor activities, Maddie developed an interest in the field of physical therapy from a young age. She chose to attend the University of Montana’s School of Health and Human Performance (now Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training) for her undergraduate studies as a step towards her intended career path as a physical therapist and business owner.
While at UM, Maddie was involved in the triathlon club team and utilized resources like Study Jam to maintain academic success. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 2016, she pursued a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and graduated with her DPT in 2019.
After completing her Doctorate, Maddie moved back to Missoula and worked as a PT, where she later acquired a physical therapy clinic in Missoula and rebranded it as Range PT in 2022. The name was suggested by her husband Jake Leininger, inspired by Montana’s mountain ranges, bison range, and the body’s range of motion and movement. Jake also attended UM, and was a student-athlete in Track & Field. He recently earned his MBA from UM and currently works as Range’s bookkeeper.
Maddie believes that entrepreneurship should be guided by a strong mission statement and a commitment to the community. She finds great satisfaction in helping patients recover from injuries and achieve their goals, as well as mentoring young professionals working as PT aides. One of her favorite things about Range PT is the clinic’s positive and supportive atmosphere, fostered by an exceptional and collaborative team dedicated to patient’s success.
For aspiring physical therapists, Maddie emphasizes the importance of shadowing professionals and gaining clinical experience to make informed decisions about pursuing a career in PT."
